Restoring wooden windows in Surrey

Rotten window frame restoration
We splice-repair decayed timber: cut out the rot back to sound wood, scarf in matched joinery, treat the surrounding timber, prime and paint. The window is structurally the same window, with a new section spliced in where the old one had failed.
Draught-proofing wooden windows
Brush seals and weatherstripping fitted into the stiles, meeting rails, and cills. Done well, the rattle goes and the heat stops leaving through the gaps around the sash.
Bay, casement and sliding sash repair
The same principle applies across the period stock — sliding sashes, side-hung casements, multi-pane bays. Keep what's sound, replace only what has failed, end up with smooth operation and a clean painted line.
Double-glazing retrofit for Surrey sash windows
Many Surrey homes with traditional sash windows still run on single glazing. Heating bills creep up every year; comfort goes the other way. A double-glazing retrofit drops the U-value at the glass from ~5.0 to ~0.7 W/m²K — triple-glazed thermal performance inside an 8 mm vacuum-insulated unit, with the original sashes left in place.
The retrofit is usually the right answer in Surrey's conservation areas: the original sash stays, the glazing bars stay, the horns and proportions stay. From the street it reads as the original window — because it is the original window, with new glass.

Can rotten window frames be repaired?
Yes. In almost every case rotten frames can be restored. We cut out the affected timber, scarf in matched joinery, treat the surrounding wood and finish to match. Full frame replacement is rare.
Can single-glazed sashes be upgraded to double glazing?
Yes. We retrofit vacuum-insulated double glazing into the original sash frames — the sash stays in place, only the glass changes. Better insulation, less noise, no change to the sightline.
Do you handle work on listed and conservation-area properties?
Yes. Much of our Surrey work is on listed or conservation-area buildings. We manage the consents, correspond with the local conservation officer, and work to the spec they sign off.
