Sash weights are heavy counterbalances-traditionally made of lead or cast iron-hidden inside the box frame of a sash window. Connected to each sash by cords or chains running over pulleys, they offset the weight of the glass and timber, allowing the sashes to open and close smoothly and stay securely in position.
In heritage restorations, original weights are often retained or replaced with accurately matched replicas to preserve authentic operation and balance, especially when upgrading to heavier double-glazed units.
