Lead has been used for centuries in traditional windows-primarily as counterweights in sash window box frames and occasionally in leaded light glazing (diamond-paned windows held by lead cames).
In sash systems, dense, corrosion-resistant lead weights balance the moving sashes via a cord-and-pulley mechanism, ensuring smooth, effortless operation.
Though sometimes replaced with cast iron or steel today, original lead weights are often retained or replicated in heritage restorations for authenticity and performance.
