# Float glass

Float glass is the standard, high-clarity flat glass used in most modern windows. It’s made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin, creating a smooth, uniform surface with minimal distortion.

While not historically accurate for pre-20th-century buildings—where crown or cylinder glass was used-float glass is now commonly specified in heritage window repairs due to its availability, affordability, and compatibility with double glazing.

For conservation projects, it can be paired with traditional putty glazing and subtle glazing bars to maintain period aesthetics.
