Beading (also called glazing bead) is the thin strip of timber or moulding used to secure glass panes within a window sash or frame. In traditional sash windows, it’s typically fixed with small nails or brads over the edge of the glass, which is bedded in linseed oil putty.
Beading not only holds the glass firmly in place but also contributes to the window’s weather-tightness and historic appearance. During restoration, original beading is carefully retained or replicated using matching profiles to maintain authenticity and performance.
