A staff bead is the interior timber trim that holds a sash window in place within its frame, running vertically along the inside face of the box frame.
It works alongside the parting bead to guide the sashes and create a seal against the elements. In heritage restorations, staff beads are often retained or carefully replicated to maintain authentic detailing, and can be fitted with discreet draught-excluding brushes to improve thermal comfort without compromising period appearance.
