A parting bead is a slender strip of timber fixed vertically inside a sash window frame to separate the upper and lower sashes, guiding their movement and helping to seal the gap between them.
In traditional box sash windows, it runs the full height of the box frame and is often paired with a staff bead on the interior face.
During refurbishment, parting beads are commonly upgraded with integrated draught-proofing brushes to significantly reduce air leakage while preserving the window’s historic function and appearance.
